How to Plan a Christmas Light Design for Your House

Key takeaways

  • Frame the house with the roofline first
  • Add trees and shrubs for depth
  • Dress the entry with wreaths and garland
  • Keep colors consistent and power planned

Start with the frame

The roofline is the frame of the display. Straight, even lines give every other element a base. If the budget is limited, start here.

Then add windows and the door, which gives the front of the house structure.

Add depth

Trees and shrubs add layers. Wrapped trunks frame the house, and lit shrubs link the display to the ground. Pathway lights then guide the eye to the door.

Think in layers: roof, mid-level trees, low shrubs and the path.

Plan the details

Choose one or two main colors and stick with them. Plan where the power comes from and how the lights will turn on, using a timer or app control.

Our Display Builder lets you add items and see the whole display come alive.

Quick answers

Where do I start if my budget is small?

Start with the roofline and the front door. You can add trees and shrubs in later seasons.

How many colors is too many?

Two or three main colors usually look best. More can feel busy unless it is a deliberate multicolor design.
